One school in Utah eliminated vending machines about 7 years ago. At first the students were unhappy but now they have students there that don't know any different and are fine. You can read about it here. Apparently this school made about $10,000 on vending machines each year.
Yikes, that's a lot of junk food. In order to make up the money lost the school has started an annual 5K where all but about a dozen students participate. I think this is an excellent idea and I hope it will catch on at other schools. It's great when someone sees the problem, gets rid of it, and replaces it with something healthier.
